The Earliest Lincolnshire Assize Rolls, 1202-1209
The Earliest Lincolnshire Assize Rolls 1202-1209
Edited by Doris M. Stenton Lecturer in History in the University of Reading
In 1916 when it was decided to publish this volume the intention had been to print it in Latin with an English translation. The editor realised that the translation would not be a great deal more intelligible that the original to those not versed in medieval law and Latin. It was decided to print the rolls in Latin transcribed according to a set of rules and add English explanatory notes to the cases where any especial difficulty arose, and to print an introduction explaining as far as possible the type of case which is dealt with, and the various stages of a suit in its passage through the Court. The editor notes that the rising cost of printing was a contributory factor in reducing the size of the volume.
