The State of the Church in the Reigns of Elizabeth and James I
Edited by C.W. Foster, M.A., F.S.A. Canon of Lincoln and Vicar of Timberland
The documents in this volume illustrate the state of the Church in the days of Queen Elizabeth 2 and James 1 & 6. There are entries in the 22 documents for the vast and unwieldy diocese comprising the counties of Lincoln, Leicester, Bedford, Buckingham, Huntingdon, & part of Hertford,. At this time the bishop’s principal place of residence was the manor of Buckden in Huntingdonshire. The documents cover the period from 1571 to 1607 spanning the episcopates of Bishops Cooper (1571-1607), Wickham (1584-1595) and Chaderton (1595-1608).. The missing documents for this period are described in the Introduction.
